Cheese Curds

I was in Wisconsin for a family event over the weekend and I can’t go there without buying cheese curds to bring home. What is a cheese curd? It’s basically cheese that’s formed into a ball and broken into funny, squiggly pieces…that squeak when you eat them. I’m not talking loud squeaking, but they do squeak, as they are somewhat rubbery.

The first time I mentioned cheese curds at work, someone thought I said, “Cheese turds.” Well, they could look like a turd, but they’re yellow and taste similar to cheddar cheese. My other half loves them. It’s a treat for him, since they aren’t easily found where we live now. In Wisconsin, you can get them at the airport in Green Bay, at most quickie marts and gas stations, in the grocery stores, and at local dairies. A great way to eat them is lightly breaded and deep-fried. The cheese melts a little and it’s yummy!

Cheese curds also come with seasonings like dill, hot pepper, garlic and onion, ranch, etc. Places like Wisconsin Cheese Mart will ship them right to your house. Tasty!
